The History of Marijuana in the U.S.

The Marijuana plant has been cultivated and used as herbal medicine since 500 BC in Central Asia. In the United States, early colonists in the 1700s cultivated plants for textiles, sails, and rope.

At that time, domestic hemp cultivation became popular. It eventually started to faze out after the American Civil War. This happened because more people were using hemp from other countries. Toward the end of the 19th Century, medicinal products began to include marijuana. It became common to see marijuana products in pharmacies. Now, Delta-8 products are becoming more and more popular.

The History of Marijuana in the U.S.

Recreational use of marijuana became more common in the 20th century. Mexican immigrants introduced recreational use in the United States. These immigrants fled the Mexican Revolution and settled in the US.

Legal History of Marijuana in the U.S.

When more people started using marijuana for fun, people started worrying about how dangerous it could be. This led to nearly half the states in the USA outlawing marijuana cultivation and use by 1931.

In 1937, using marijuana became illegal in the US. In the 1950s, people could go to prison for marijuana offenses. But by 1970, these laws were no longer in place because people’s opinions had changed. This change was mostly a result of many studies that delinked marijuana with violence and addiction.

After repeal, some states reduced marijuana penalties. In 1976, the nationwide conservative movement supported stricter drug laws. America’s War on Drugs also began. Many states signed anti-marijuana laws during the Reagan and Bush administrations. After many studies, California made it legal to use marijuana for medical reasons in 1996.

In 2012, Colorado and Washington followed suit. Several other US states have since followed suit as well. While marijuana use remains illegal federally, some local laws now permit recreational use.

In 2018, the Federal Agricultural Act eliminated hemp from the list of controlled substances. Legal hemp only contains less than 0.3% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). This is the psychotropic compound that causes euphoria in marijuana.

Marijuana Vs. Hemp

The significant difference between these two substances is their THC content. Marijuana has high levels of THC (up to 35%). Hemp is obtained from cannabis plants containing below 0.3% THC. Thus, products derived from legal hemp are federally legal.

Delta-8 THC products are a popular category of hemp-derived products. They offer several therapeutic benefits and a milder “high” compared to marijuana. You can buy good quality delta-8 products from trusted companies online legally.

The Outcome of Marijuana in the U.S.

The history of marijuana in the US is an interesting one. Past laws criminalized the use and cultivation of the plant. However, many such laws have been overturned.

In the face of several controversies, marijuana use remains illegal on a federal level in the US. However, local laws are being passed to favor its use for medicine and recreation. Today, many brands have tapped into the ever-growing market of hemp-derived products.

Delta-8 Legalization In The U.S.

Delta-8 became federally legal in the United States under the 2018 Farm Bill, which legalized hemp and hemp-derived products. However, the legality of Delta-8 THC at the state level is not uniform and varies from state to state.

Some states have explicitly banned Delta-8 THC, while others have not yet addressed its legality. It is important to note that even in states where Delta-8 THC is legal, there may be restrictions on its sale, possession, and use. It is always advisable to check local laws and regulations before purchasing or using Delta-8 THC products.
