When Was Cannabis Legalized?

The cannabis plant has been in use for various purposes for millennia. The first recorded use of cannabis can be traced back to Central Asia during the third millennium BC.

In the United States, though, federal law still prohibits cannabis. But it is acceptable in some states for either leisure or therapeutic uses. Hence the rise of CBD, Delta-8 products, Delta-9, and THC on the market.

When Was Cannabis Legalized?

California’s Proposition 215 in 1996 was the first to approve the medicinal use of cannabis.

2012’s Amendment 64 in Colorado made it the first state to permit the recreational use of cannabis. On October 17, 2018, cannabis became legal in Canada. In recent years, many countries have been planning to legalize the use of cannabis for medicine and recreation. But when was cannabis legalized?

Cannabis Legalization in Recent Times

Cannabis legalization varies for each country and municipality. The legality at the state level may change at the national level. Most countries have banned cannabis entirely, while some have approved it for medical purposes but not recreational purposes.

Legalization Of Cannabis

California was the first state to legalize medical cannabis in 1996. Alaska and Nevada followed suit two years later. Recreational use became legal in Alaska in 2014 and in California in 2016.

Since then, 21 states have legalized cannabis, while ten have decriminalized it. But what is the difference?

Legalization Vs. Decriminalization

A once-banned drug made legal under federal or state law is legalization. A once-banned drug is still prohibited by law, but the legal system will no longer prosecute or criminalize a person for carrying under a certain amount is decriminalization.

The 2018 Farm Bill

The 2018 Farm Bill removed hemp-derived products from their Schedule 1 status as long as they abide by the THC content of less than 0.3%. In 2023, the legalization of cannabis may expand throughout the U.S. Presently, Washington D.C and 21 states permit the recreational use of cannabis for individuals 21 years up, while 37 states did establish approved medical cannabis programs. Additionally, CBD products with trace quantities of THC, the substance that gives marijuana its characteristic “high,” are legal in 11 states.

Before you possess, use or sell cannabis, it is critical to check the status of cannabis in your state to avoid getting in trouble with the law.
